When you are setting out to buy corbels for your home, there are a number of factors that you should consider for your project to be a success. Corbels are available in an array of different sizes, colors, and styles; your choice of corbel will depend on the look and feel that you are going for, as well as where it will be installed, and what purpose it will serve.

To start, consider what style corbel appeals to you based on your existing décor. If your home is more traditional, you may want to choose a corbel that has clean lines, like a mission corbel. If you are going for a more whimsical feel, you can choose from an array of elaborate designs and richly ornamental constructions, like a floral corbel. For a home that has a modern feel, you may want to opt for an acanthus style corbel; these corbels often have a leaf-like decoration built into their mold that is both elegant and understated. You can also choose a style of corbel to achieve a desired look; for example, to spice up an otherwise plain décor, you could pick a more ostentatiously styled corbel. Likewise, a classic and simple corbel might a suitable contrast to a room that is already quite lavishly decorated. In short, the diverse array of styles that are available make corbels appropriate for any existing décor; your particular choice will depend on the effect you wish to achieve, as well as your own personal taste.

Wooden corbels are a popular choice for their appearance, versatility, and durability. In particular, wood corbels are complimentary to homes with hard wood flooring to bring together a room. The sturdy construction and flat top of certain corbels is ideal for use as a shelf. Other corbels that are slimmer and rounded at the top cater more to decorative purposes than functional use. Regardless of whether you are installing a corbel purely for decoration or for structural support, corbels should always give the visual impression of serving a functional purpose.

In deciding what size corbel you should purchase, utility is also a determining factor. If you are installing a corbel to support a fixture, such as a kitchen counter, it is important that the corbel be at least half of the depth of the structure that it will support. For use of corbels to provide reinforcement for shelving, pick a corbel that is at least two thirds of the depth of the shelf. Corbels that will be used to support a more substantial fixture such as a structural beam require a corbel that is as wide as the beam, or at least no less than one fourth of the beam's width.

5 Great Ways To Turn Your Bookshelves Into Display Shelves

You've got a great collection that you want to put on display in your home, you have spare space on your bookshelves, now what? Read on, and find out 5 things you can do to "spruce up" regular bookshelves so that your precious collection (whether it's airsick bags, golf balls, or your favorite pieces of driftwood) will look great.

Bookshelves are designed to hold books (I know, I know... DUH!). The problem is that they aren't really the best shelves for displaying objects. They are thick, deep, and have limited viewing space. Since you only really need to see the spines of books, the interior part of a bookshelf is darker and less visible. A display shelf should allow you to see everything on the shelf, not only what's on the outside edge. Here are 5 simple and inexpensive things you can do to increase the viewable area of your shelves, and turn them into great display shelves.

1. Replace the moveable shelves with glass ones.

If your bookshelf has adjustable shelves that rest on pins, simply get the measurements of the shelves and go to a glazier. They can cut glass to the same dimensions and you can put in light, clear glass shelves which will completely change the "feel" of the shelving unit. The main thing you have to be aware of though is getting glass designed to withstand the stress. Explain to the glazier what you want to do, and ask to get shelf brackets that fit into the holes of the vertical supports of the bookshelf instead of the pins that are there now.

2. Install lighting underneath each shelf.

You can get inexpensive fluorescent lights from most hardware stores. Buy small, flat units and wire them together so that they are controlled from one switch. Drill small holes in the back of the bookshelf for the wires, and mount the lights on the underside of each shelf. This way, with the flick of a switch you can light up the darker parts of the shelves, and make your whole collection more visible.

3. Install mirror backing.

Measure the back, vertical part of the shelf, and then buy mirror and glue it to the back. This will reflect the back of your collection, and make the whole shelf feel much deeper, while it also will highlight all of the items on the shelf.

4. Paint the shelves a different color.

If you want to draw attention to your collection on display, consider painting the shelves a different color. If the whole unit is a wood texture, think about painting the display shelves white. This will offset them from the rest of the unit and highlight the collection on them. The color of the shelf depends very much on what type of collection you're displaying. Bright and shiny objects (quartz rock, glass figurines, etc.) might go better on a darker background, while model cars would look better on a lighter background. Think about it!

5. Wood lettering and other decorations.

A great way to spruce up your shelves is to add lettering around the frame to personalize it. Here's an example. You can purchase simple wood or plastic letter in many colors, and glue them onto the frame. So above a collection of golf balls you can put up "FORE!" or something to that effect. This will serve to draw everyone's eye to the shelves, and to your precious collection.

Do It Yourself - Custom Entertainment Center

No one would argue that family life centers around the dining room table - and why not? Great food, warm, inviting atmosphere and familiar conversation. But once the meal is finished, the table cleared and the dishes done, parents and kids alike usually migrate into the family room for an evening of TV or music. Everyone gathers around the entertainment center to unwind and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

The entertainment center has been a staple of modern families for decades and while it's easy to pull out the credit card at the local department store, a custom built unit you make yourself will bring years of enjoyment and pride. This is an easy, do it yourself at home project that doesn't take a lot of time, is
relatively inexpensive and can be built with tools you probably already own but there are a few things to consider.

Size Does Matter

The biggest consideration will be the size of the unit. Room size will be the determining factor with a consideration toward how big a TV will need to fit. Will the unit contain storage for DVD's or books?...and are there electrical outlets near the intended location?

Back To Basics

You don't need half the inventory at the Home Depot tool department to complete your project (although it would be nice to have!). The main tools you'll need are a measuring tape, saw and screwdriver. Of course powered tools, like a skill saw or tablesaw and electric screwdrivers make the job that much easier. Electric sanders, brackets and or wall mounts, fastening materials like screws and finish nails along with stains, and brushes will nicely round out your arsenal.

Materials

Although hardwoods like oak and maple can be used, 3/4 inch plywood will do the job and be sturdy enough to complete the task. It will also save you a little green and of course, money has to be a consideration is nearly everything we do nowadays.

Plan Ahead

Make a drawing or sketch of your project. It doesn't need to be a massive 6 page artist's rendering but should include measurements or at least estimates of the general size and shape. This will give you a general idea of the amount of materials you'll need and an idea of the overall costs. Color and finish are factors but can be decided once parts have been cut and dry-assembled to give you a feel for the finished unit.

Also, it may not occur to you at this point but don't discount the possibility of one day needing to move your entertainment center. A modular unit built with this in mind will save you time and headaches you can do without. Will it be easy to dis-mantle and re-assemble in its new location?

After constructing the frame, you will want to think cabinet size/shape and shelving. This wants more attention to detail than the frame simply because even a small mistake will show here. Precise measurements between cabinet walls is essential at this point. A miscalculation here could cost you another trip to the hardware store or an out-of-square cabinet.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Once the measurements are made and the pieces cut, you'll want to assemble them without glue or nails. This insures you first measured correctly, and secondly you had the eye hand coordination to cut straight. If everything dry fits, give yourself a pat on the back, you'll have sawdust on you anyway!

Final Approach

Final assembly can be done either in the workshop if the unit is small enough to be handled by two people or can be brought piecemeal to the final location if you decided on the modular approach. Once assembly is done, insure the unit is stable so it doesn't tip once your TV, stereo, books and what-not have been loaded into it. If necessary, wall brackets can be mounted to add more stability.

Find the Best Way to Make Pelmets That Look Fantastic

You can save a ton of money and get something custom made that looks fantastic and really professional. I will show you how easy it is to make a fabric covered pelmet to fit over your curtains. Your friends and family will not believe you made it yourself.

Tools you will need to make your pelmet

1. Staple gun
2. scissors
3. tape measure
4. Wood saw
5. Long straight edge (marking lines on fabric)

I suspect most people will have a few of these already. If you are missing any before you run off and buy them ask a friend or neighbor. The next thing is the stuff to make it out of.

Materials to make your pelmet

1. 1/4 inch plywood (sheet of)
2. 1/4 inch staples for your staple gun
3. Curtain lining fabric for the back
4. Curtain fabric of your choice for front of pelmet
5. 8oz sheet fiber wadding (Gives pelmet softer look)
6. Velcro tape (both sides soft and hard)
7. A4 sheets of thin cardboard (very thick paper will do)
8. Can of spray glue (stuff you stick carpets down with)
9. Almost forgot a timber board 6 inches X 1 inches and as long as your pelmet.

I hope you agree with me not an overwhelming list of expensive items on either of the above lists. So the next step in our little project is the making part. Don't panic I will keep it really simple.

Putting your new pelmet together

1. Decide how wide and how deep you want your pelmet to be. Then get the local timber merchant to cut your 1/4 inch plywood board to right size. The sheets usually come in 4ft X 8ft sheets, so if your pelmet is going to be 6ft wide by 12 inches deep. Then get the board cut to this size and also get to extra pieces cut for the sides (the returns). They need to be 12 inches deep again and 6 inches wide.

2. Now you join the return bits to each end. I use scrap fabric and lay it across both pieces and staple it down to create a hinge. Do this for both ends of the long board.

3. cut your fiber wadding sheet to the size of your pelmet board including the end returns. Then spray the glue onto the board (the side without the fabric hinges showing). Then place on sheet wadding and press down.

4. Next step is to cover the board with fiber wadding attached. You need to cut your fabric 4 inches wider and longer than your board with return bits (use you straight edge to mark pencil lines). Then lay fabric face down onto the your table. Now lay your pelmet board wadding side down onto your curtain fabric leaving 2 inches showing all the way around. Now using your staple give fold over the fabric and staple down all the way round Pulling fabric under a little tension as you go.

5. The next step is to cover the back of you pelmet in curtain lining fabric to make it all neat. Again your curtain lining needs to be 4 inches wider and longer than the pelmet board. Now you need to cut your thin card into strips 2 inches wide and fold in half making them 1 inch wide.

Now have you pelmet face down on the table with the back facing up. Then place your lining fabric so it overlaps the bottom of your pelmet by 2 inches. Next place the card board strip along the edge of the lining fabric. You need to open the strips a little and staple down in place. Then you now fold over the lining fabric up the back of the pelmet. The card board strips under the lining fabric give a nice sharp edge to the bottom of the lining fabric while holding it in place at the same time.

Next step is to fold in the ends of the curtain lining so they finish just at the ends of the pelmet board. Just fold in and press down with you hand for now. Now for the top of the pelmet you need to trim the lining fabric so it finishes a 1/4 inch down from the top. Then take your soft strip of Velcro tape and staple down at the very top of your new pelmet. This locks in the lining fabric at the same time.

6. Now your pelmet is finished except for the top board to stick it to. This is a simple timber board 6 inches X 1 inch by as long as you pelmet. You need to now staple the hard strip of Velcro onto the 1 inch edge including around the ends of the board.

Putting it together is simple fit your top board over your window on shelf brackets with the Velcro facing out. Then present the soft Velcro on the back of your new pelmet to the hard Velcro on the top board and press. That's it All made and fitted told you it was simple. So take your time and enjoy making something really special.

The AS3B is a tri-shelf cable management system. It can be used with or without a Plasma/LCD mount. This unit is designed to fit under your display and provide an on wall solution for other components such as cable boxes, DVD players, game consoles, and stereo components. There are three 2.25-Inch holes on the aluminum plate that allow you to cleanly run your cables up to your TV or down to another component, as well as out the bottom to an outlet. After reviewing our competition we realized that most shelving units need to be mounted directly into a wall stud. In most cases the wall stud is placed to the right or to the left of the display, which is not where most people prefer to have their shelves mounted. This is still the most secure option however, after significant research we’ve fount that using the correct toggle bolts can allow you to mount your shelving unit wherever you see fit. With the combination of four of these toggle bolts the shelving unit is able to hold well over 70LBS safely. Each individual toggle bolt provides 75LBS of support. Please not that a good toggle bolt is still only as good as the quality of the drywall it is mounted into. If you have water damage or .25-Inch drywall please add a support for your shelving unit.

When you look around your house, if all you see are bare walls then you may want to come up with some ideas to fill that space and make it more interesting. If you do not have a lot of money to go out and buy fabulous artwork to put on the wall, do not worry, because for just pennies, you can create your own wall art that will make your walls sing.

Your Own Painting. Who said that you are not an artist? Anyone can create a piece of art. Go to a craft store, and buy a canvas and some paints. Now simply paint a design that you find appealing. It does not have to be "of" anything. It can merely be shapes and colors that you find pleasing. You can use paint and a brush, spray paint, stencils, stamps or a combination of them all to create your own work of art. And do not worry about making a mistake. If you do not like your finished artwork, simply paint over it and try again.

Wood Shelving Brackets

Closet tubing comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials, and colors. The most common shapes, or profiles, are round and oval. Round closet rod is sold in 1-1/16 inch diameter tube and 1-5/16 diameter tube. It can be purchased in steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.

Round closet rod generally carries more weight due to the shape of the tube and usually has a thicker wall. While either size is suitable for a closet, for maximum weight bearing capacity use 1-5/16 diameter rod.

Oval tube isn't truly oval in shape but more of an oblong rounded shape with two flat sides. It normally measures 15 x 30 mm or approximately 1-1/8 x 1-1/4 inches. Oval tube is manufactured in steel or aluminum.

Materials

Metal closet rod is available in Steel, Stainless Steel, and Aluminum. Steel is typically sold with a Polished Chrome finish; this is the most common closet rod material and finish. Its advantages are strength and durability at a lower price. Stainless Steel is typically sold with a satin or brushed finish. It offers the strength and durability of steel with the added advantage of rust and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is ideal for humid and sea-side applications.

Aluminum is sold in a variety of anodized finishes. Anodizing is a process in which electricity is used to produce a hard and durable surface. Aluminum tubing is much lighter in weight but with a similar load bearing capacity to steel.

Evaluate your needs

Length - The first thing you should consider for your installation is the length of the closet rod. The length should be determined by measuring the wall to wall distance. Dry wall often has very slight waves or undulations in it so that the distance between walls may differ from one spot to another. For this reason it's important that you take your wall to wall measurement at the exact spot where the closet rod will be installed. Usually the closet rod is mounted at least 12 inches from the back wall. Having someone help you measure will make the job much easier and give you better results. If you need a closet rod over 8 feet long some profiles and finishes are available in extended lengths up to 12 feet.

Weight bearing needs - Next, decide what kind of clothing will be stored on your closet rod. While a mix of garments is expected in a normal closet, an Arizona wardrobe will be much different from a Minnesota wardrobe. Cold weather clothing will weigh a lot more and that should be taken into consideration. A closet rod in a coat closet will need to support a lot of heavy items while a closet rod in a nursery closet will not need to support much weight at all. Keep in mind that the longer the closet rod the more likely it is to sag when loaded with clothing. Center supports and shelf/rod brackets will keep the closet rod straight. As a general rule, closet rods under 5 feet don't require center support. For longer spans consider using center supports every 3 or 4 feet.

Finish - After the practical needs of your closet are determined you can concentrate on aesthetics. Profile shape, color, and finish should fit the décor of the closet and surrounding room. With so many choices available you should have no problem finding something to suit your taste.

Mounting Flanges

Mounting flanges are the supports that attach to the wall and hold your closet rod up. Each type of rod will have mounting flanges made specifically for it but there are common types of flanges used for all tubing. Open flanges are made with the top portion open like a "U" so the closet rod can be easily lifted out. Closed flanges completely encircle the end of the mounted closet rod and do not allow removal without unscrewing the flange from the wall. 32mm pinned flanges are made to work with 32mm systems or European Closet systems. These are closet systems that have pre-drilled holes spaced at 32 millimeters running up and down the closet side panels. While 32mm flanges can also be screwed in place, this isn't necessary and foregoing screws allows adjustment of the closet rod up or down if you wish. 32mm flanges are available for round and oval tubing in open and closed variations.

Accounting for mounting flange space

Since the mounting flange may have a back-plate, the flange you use will determine the cut length of the rod. For instance, if the wall to wall measurement is 60 inches and you are using two open flanges you'll need to subtract ¼ inch from the total length of the rod. Each open flange has a 1/8 inch back plate. 1/8 + 1/8 = ¼ inch of space that will occupy the total length of 60 inches. Some closed flanges have an opening all the way through so that your closet rod will actually touch the wall. In this instance the rod itself could actually be 60 inches long. Be sure to find out what space your mounting flanges will take up and factor that into the total length of the application. Each flange has a cuff, the part that encloses and supports the end of the tube. The cuff will be between ½ inch and 1 inch deep. Keeping in mind the cuff depth you may want to cut the closet rod just slightly shorter to give yourself some "wiggle room".

Cutting Closet Tubing

While it is possible to cut closet tubing yourself it's usually worth it to pay a cutting charge if that service is provided by your supplier. If you do decide to cut it yourself use a saw blade made for cutting metal. Be sure to use your saw as directed by the manufacturer to prevent accidents!

Installation

Once you have everything measured and cut you may proceed with installation. This step will be easier with some assistance so get a friend to help. You've already made sure that your tubing is adequate for your closet, now you need to make sure that it's firmly and securely mounted in place. The mounting flanges are far more likely to tear loose from the wall than your closet rod is to bend so it's critical that this step is done correctly! If the closet rod is to be attached to dry-wall be sure that it is located so the screws go through the dry-wall and into a wall stud. Dry-wall alone is not sufficient as a mounting surface. If you're unable to screw into a stud, plan on using a wood mounting board on top of the wall. This should be firmly attached to the wall studs and will provide a suitable point of attachment for your mounting flanges. If you do use a mounting board remember to subtract its thickness from your wall to wall measurement when determining your closet rod length. Depending on the type of flange you're using, it may be screwed in place before the rod is set or it may need to be slid onto the rod prior to screwing in place.

Using Your Closet

Once everything is in place you can start filling your closet. While metal tubing has a very durable finish it can scratch if used roughly. It's always a good idea to use quality hangers to protect your clothes and your closet rod. Plastic hangers will ensure that the finished surface remains scratch free. Wood and metal hangers are fine just as long as the hook has a smooth finished end. Wire dry cleaning hangers have sharp ends and should be avoided.

Three Ways to Use Math in Everyday Life

Like me, I'm sure you've heard students or our kids say, "Why do I have to learn math? I'll never use this after I graduate." There are many ways we use math daily in our lives. I will list only three ways to use math in everyday life. The three ways are: 1. Making change in the market place. 2. Calculating how much to buy. 3. When using weights and measures.

1. Making change in the market place seems like an easy thing to do, however how many times do we get the wrong amount back at the cash register? Now the cash registers do the calculating for us. There are still the times when we have to figure this out for ourselves. Say you want to buy a sweater for .00 and you only have five dollars. How much more do you need to buy the sweater? Maybe you have a ten dollar bill and you give it to the cashier. How much should you get back? It's easy with the round numbers, but what about the .98 type prices that marketing insists on? This is a skill we will continue to use the rest of our lives. Making change in a play store at school is a great way to practice and learn this skill.

2. Calculating how much to buy. Whether you are building a shelf, sewing a dress or buying food for a dinner you will have to use this skill. Building a book shelf four feet long and two feet wide and four shelves high will take how much wood? If you have four shelves on your book shelf you will have to multiply the amount needed to make one shelf by four to find out how much wood to buy. You will also have to calculate the amount of wood needed for the sides and back unless you use bricks or brackets. Likewise when sewing a dress you will have to decide how much fabric you will need to cut out the pieces. Usually, this is calculated on the back of the pattern. If you want lace on the dress, you will have to calculate how many yards you will need. When buying food for a dinner, you will have to decide how many people you are feeding. How much meat or vegetables you will need for each person will depend on their age and appetite and that will tell you how much you will have to buy. This is a skill that can be developed through practice. Some people are better at this because of their experiences. Some of us need much more practice. However, if we know what we are doing because we listened to the math lessons, we will more likely make better calculations. This practice makes a big difference when you are on a budget. You will save money because there is less chance of wasted food.

3. When using weights and measures in cooking and even purchasing food or other measurable products such as sand, granite, etc. you will automatically need to calculate. I have a friend that teaches math calculation through cooking lessons. They have fun measuring out the ingredients and eating the final product. When I made and sold cookies to the neighbors, I had to carefully calculate how much flour, sugar and other ingredients I needed so I didn't have to stop and go to the store while I was mixing up the ingredients in the recipe. When we needed to buy sand for the sand box we had to calculate how much area would be filled with sand then buy that many bags of sand. When my son did his Eagle Project he had to calculate how much granite he would have to have delivered to fill in the space around the plants at the church. This is definitely a skill we will use throughout our lives.

There are many ways we can use math in our everyday lives. I have addressed only three in this article, i.e. making change in the market place, calculating how much to buy and using weights and measures. These are skills are worth developing to make our lives easier. Now, when the students ask, "When am I ever going to use this?" you can tell them.

How to Make Simple Bookshelves - Part Two

Dowels can be very handy for supporting shelves from the sides. If shelf ends are notched, you can build a room-dividing-bookcase by cutting a standard 4 by 4 to reach from floor to ceiling (where it is attached with an L-shaped bracket) and running dowels through at varying heights to hold the shelf ends. Or, a back cleat can be combined with pins or dowels on the sides of a bookcase to form a sturdy support.

There are many different types of metal fixtures available for bookshelves. Brackets, braces, and angle irons can be purchased in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles (including ornamental designs) for attaching open shelves to either back or end supports. Metal brackets add strength where a heavy load is to be placed on shelving.

Wood Shelving Brackets

For adjustable shelving - a great way of eliminating waste space - wall standards with notches 13mm.apart can be purchased along with special brackets to fit them. They are available either for shelves supported from the sides or from the back. For end support, pair of the 20mm. wide standards and two brackets for each side of each shelf is needed. For back supports, one pair of wall standards will do, unless the shelves are extra long. Shelves are supported by rungs. Notch ends of shelving boards to fit snugly between supports. Height of shelves is easily changed. Bookcase can be dismantled.

You can choose almost any wood for bookshelves, provided it can stand the dead weight of the volumes it will hold. Commonly used types are 25mm. by 300mm. fir and particle board and 20mm. plywood. Many lumberyards carry 1-inch thick bookshelf stock that has a rounded front edge.

Bookshelf space should be a minimum of 23cm. high and 21cm. deep for books of average size. Larger volumes may require a shelf 30cm. deep and 30cm. high. Width usually depends on the number of books you have to shelve. The highest shelf should be no more than 2 meters off the floor.
